Groundwater flooding in South East London

Warning no longer in force

Groundwater levels in South London have started to decline in May after the highs in March and April, as levels responded to the onset of drier and warmer conditions. With groundwater levels remaining relatively high it is expected that the Caterham Bourne will continue to flow throughout May, however, rates of flow have started to decline since the end of April and the risk of groundwater related flooding is now gradually diminishing.

Whilst property and garden flood risks have reduced, riparian owners are still reminded to keep clear any sections of river that flow through their land. We continue to monitor the situation alongside Surrey County Council, Tandridge District Council and the London Borough of Croydon. Whilst the risk from groundwater flooding is gradually decreasing over the coming weeks and this is unlikely to change until the onset of the next recharge season, we will re-issue the groundwater flood alert in the very unlikely event of the situation changing significantly in the short term.
